Spicy Tuna Tartare on Cucumber Rounds

Spicy tuna tartare on cucumber rounds is a fresh and vibrant appetizer that combines the rich, buttery texture of tuna with a spicy kick, all served on cool, crisp cucumber slices.

This dish is a sophisticated and healthy alternative to traditional appetizers, offering a delightful contrast of flavors and textures.

The tuna is marinated in a blend of soy sauce, sesame oil, and spicy sriracha, while the cucumber rounds provide a refreshing base that perfectly complements the bold flavors of the tartare. Whether served at a dinner party or as a light appetizer, this dish will certainly impress your guests.

Ingredients:

For the Spicy Tuna Tartare:

1/2 lb sushi-grade tuna, finely diced

1 tablespoon soy sauce

1 teaspoon sesame oil

1 tablespoon sriracha sauce (adjust to taste for heat level)

1 teaspoon rice vinegar

1 teaspoon honey (optional, for balance)

1 tablespoon chopped green onions

1 tablespoon sesame seeds (optional, for garnish)

1 teaspoon freshly grated ginger (optional)

For the Cucumber Rounds:

1 large cucumber

1 tablespoon rice vinegar

Pinch of sea salt

For Garnish:

1 teaspoon toasted sesame seeds (optional)

1-2 fresh cilantro leaves (optional)

1/2 teaspoon chili flakes (optional, for extra heat)

How to Make:

Prepare the Cucumber Rounds:

Wash the cucumber and cut off both ends. Slice the cucumber into thick rounds, about 1/4 inch in width.

Place the cucumber slices in a small bowl, sprinkle with a pinch of sea salt, and drizzle with rice vinegar. Toss gently to coat the cucumber and let them sit for 10-15 minutes to marinate. This will enhance the cucumber’s flavor and soften it slightly.

Make the Spicy Tuna Tartare:

In a separate bowl, combine the diced sushi-grade tuna with the soy sauce, sesame oil, sriracha sauce, rice vinegar, and honey (if using). Mix gently to ensure the tuna is evenly coated with the sauce.

Add the chopped green onions and grated ginger (if using) and stir to combine. Taste the mixture and adjust the seasoning if necessary. For more heat, you can add additional sriracha sauce.

Assemble the Dish:

Once the cucumbers have marinated, arrange the cucumber rounds on a serving platter. Use a spoon to place a small amount of the spicy tuna tartare on top of each cucumber round, pressing it down slightly to help it stick.

Garnish the tartare with toasted sesame seeds, fresh cilantro leaves, and a sprinkle of chili flakes for an extra burst of flavor and heat.

Serve:

Serve immediately, ensuring the tartare is fresh and chilled, and the cucumber remains crisp.

Chef’s Note:

If you’re not a fan of spicy food, you can adjust the amount of sriracha to suit your taste, or omit it altogether and use a milder marinade. For a different twist, try adding a small amount of avocado to the tuna tartare for extra creaminess. Additionally, this dish can be made in advance by preparing the tuna tartare and refrigerating it, but be sure to assemble the cucumber rounds just before serving to maintain their crispness.
